If you've ever driven from Canberra to Cooma, and even beyond to other parts of the Monaro Region, you've probably noticed a significant amount of disused rail line, lying dormant and unused. It was this aspect that formed the catalyst for the idea - turning the unused track into a 204 kilometre walking and cycling trail, stretching from Canberra to Bombala.
After years of fundraising and dedication from the Monaro Rail Trail Committee, there dream is now a step closer with the release of the Feasibility Report. The report forcasts an additional $1 million injection into the local economy through business operations associated with servicing the trail.
Despite the significant fundraising and community support to date, there is still a long way to go to see the dream become a reality. The committee continues to work towards achieving this dream and this project could lead to other disused rail lines being converted into trails in the future.
